Pitta Dosha

Pitta Dosha is the expression in a human being’s body and mind of the qualities found in the natural “element” Fire. Everything you can say about Pitta dosha is everything you can say about the intrinsic nature of Fire; the way it behaves, and what it produces.

What is Pitta Dosha?

In Ayurveda we look at Pitta Dosha as the expression in a human being’s body and mind of the qualities found in the natural “element” Fire. Everything you can say about Pitta dosha is everything you can say about the intrinsic nature of Fire; the way it behaves, and what it produces.

Fire is first and foremost hot and bright. In Nature it produces heat and light. But every knife cuts two ways. When balanced, when in the appropriate amount, heat provides warmth. But, when heat is too high it burns.

In a human, the heat of the fire intrinsic to Pitta dosha gives a person  good digestive fire, good elimination, the ability to digest more raw food and cold energy food, the need to have more cooling foods, a body able to withstand the cold. On the other hand the fire intrinsic to Pitta will give a person a tendency to hot type gut disorders like GERD, gastritis, and IBS-D.They will tend to diarrhea with stress. While they can have nice warm skin, they can also tend to hot type skin disorders involving redness and heat, like Acne, Eczema, Rosacea, and hives.
